FACULTY OF SCIENCE Information Package Definitions
The Faculty of Science at Firat University was established on April 1, 1975, by Law No. 1873. The Faculty Board held its first meeting on October 22, 1975. At this meeting, it was decided to open the following departments within the Faculty of Science: Biology, Physics, Statistics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Earth Sciences, and Astronomy.
The Faculty of Science began its educational activities in the 1975-1976 academic year with the enrollment of students in the Mathematics Department. It was envisioned that the Chemistry Department would be established as Chemical Engineering, and the Biology Department as two separate departments: Botany and Zoology. The Physics Engineering and Geological Engineering Departments were opened in the 1977-1978 academic year. Following the division of the Biology Department into Botany and Zoology on April 4, 1978, the Faculty of Science continued its education with six departments: Botany, Mathematics, Zoology, Physics Engineering, Geological Engineering, and Chemical Engineering.
According to Law No. 2809 dated 28.03.1983, which amended Decree Law No. 41 concerning the Organization of Higher Education Institutions, the Faculties of Science and Letters merged to form the "Faculty of Science and Letters". Departments of Chemistry and Physics were established within the Faculty of Science and Letters; however, the Physics Engineering Department, previously within the Faculty of Science, was closed, and the Geological Engineering and Chemical Engineering Departments were transferred to the Faculty of Engineering. The Statistics Department began teaching with 40 students in the 2005-2006 academic year.
According to the Council of Ministers Decision No. 2010/175, published in the Official Gazette No. 27518 on March 11, 2010, the Faculty of Science and Letters within our university was closed, and the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences were established in its place. The inclusion of the departments and sub-departments within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences into the newly established Faculty of Science was examined at the Higher Education Executive Board meeting on April 7, 2010, and approved in accordance with Article 7/d-2 of Law No. 2547, as amended by Law No. 2880.
Our proposal to establish the Molecular Biology and Genetics Program within the Biology Department of our Faculty was examined at the Higher Education Executive Board meeting on April 22, 2014, and deemed appropriate in accordance with Article 7/d-2 of Law No. 2547, as amended by Law No. 2880. The Molecular Biology and Genetics Program commenced instruction in the 2016-2017 academic year with the admission of 15 (fifteen) students.
Today, within our Faculty; The Biology Department, along with its Molecular Biology and Genetics Program, Physics, Statistics, Chemistry, and Mathematics departments, comprises a total of 5 departments and 1 program, and continues to provide education and training services with 106 faculty members and 831 students.
